BT-1039Pin Vises - And Pins

This is our double headed pin vise. We firmly feel that a pin vise is a requirement for cleaning coins. It provides you with a sharp point to get into the cracks, and helps to dislodge the crust covering your coin.

This pin vise is durable and weighted well so that you can hold it comfortably in you hand while working.

Additionally the double heads allow you to load both ends. Please note that there are four sizes that the pin vise can hold. So you can hold a pin on one end, and another item on the other of greater size (maybe a sewing needle or something like that). Each head unscrews and has a reversible insert for just about any size pin.

Here is an example of what you can do with a pin vise (tungsten tip)

Also Note: Each Pin Vise includes a sample pack of pins, our item # BT-1053. Here is a picture of the included pins)

BT-1000Pen BrushesThe Refillable Pen Brush is one of the finest cleaning tools that you can have in your arsenal of cleaning equipment.
You are able to use any of the four refills in the same pen! And you will find that you have much more control over what part of the surface your brush is used on.

We use three pens when we are cleaning coins. One with a Nylon tip for that gentle touch and to clear the face of the coin. One with a brass tip for stubborn areas. And one with either a fiberglass or steel tip depending on the coins condition.

You will not regret buying one of these pen brushes!

The best description for the nylon tips is toothbrushes on steroids! They provide a firm yet gentle cleaning contact with your coins.

BT-1002Pen BrushesRefills for the BT-1000 Refillable Pen Brush

The fiberglass tips REQUIRE you to be careful. The ends will fray and break off with use, and they are buggers when they stick in your fingers. You can avoid this sometimes with a wet or damp environment. Basically have a damp paper towel under the coin that you are cleaning so that the fiberglass shards are caught on the damp paper towel. You might ask why would I use this? They are very effective at cleaning coins.
$1.50
BT-1003Pen BrushesRefills for the BT-1000 Refillable Pen Brush

The brass tips are a really nice brush when cleaning coins. When you are frustrated with your toothbrush or large brass brush, come over to the brass tips. You will find that you have a lot of control over where the brush makes contact with the coin.
$1.75
BT-1004Pen BrushesRefills for the BT-1000 Refillable Pen Brush

The steel tips sound rough, and are NOT recommended for the faint at heart. You can damage your coin very quickly. But there are cases when the steel brush makes sense, so we offer them because people do use them. BUT please be careful!
$1.75
BT-1005Pen BrushesThis brush is a Fiberglass model only. The fiberglass tip is about 1/4 the size of the tips you will find in the Refillable Pen Brush (BT-1000). It is an excellent detail brush, and gets those hard to get places with even more control than the BT-1000. Again, best used with a damp paper towel under the coin to catch the fiberglass shards that will fray from the cleaning brush.$12.00

BB-1006Books on ForgeriesCoin Collections and Coin Hoards from Bulgaria' no. 3, in English, format 16?, 88 pp., glossy black paperback, 112 coins in bronze, silver and gold, 27 casts, 14 pages in full color. Sofia, SP&P Publishing, October 2004.

This is the third book on the counterfeits of ancient coins from present-day Bulgaria. In 1997, a team of three co-authors lead by Dr Prokopov prepared and edited a first small book of fake coins, which was subsequently published in Sofia. The present catalogue is a result of that continuing initiative and work.

In this format (22.5x14.5 cm) is published a large group of modern and ancient cast forgeries of Greek and Roman coins coming from Bulgaria. 112 coins in gold, silver, copper and bronze are catalogued and illustrated with nice black & white photos in chronological and geographic principle. For the first time a group of 15 coins and details are presented in full color. In the beginning, authors show 11 Roman contemporary cast coins from Moesia - 5 asses and 11 denarii. Next a pseudo-hoard of fake and genuine Roman Imperial coins - consisting of 2 aurei and 74 denarii, is shown. The Bulgarian police authorities at the customs deprived it in the fall of 2003. From the total number of coins, 6 specimens are Greek and Macedonian (4 in silver, 2 in bronze); 83 Roman (Republican - 1 denarius; Imperial: - 82, (3 in gold, 80 in silver, 11 in bronze, 1 in lead). A special section of the catalogue is devoted to a modern rubber/plastic negative matrix for making imprints of cast models of Roman Imperial denarii. All are illustrated in detail and commented.

A comprehensive 7-pages introduction provides background information about the phenomenon of coin forgery production in modern Bulgaria. The pattern, technology of casting and methods of authentication are discussed as well as some up-to-date references are quoted.

BB-1007Books on ForgeriesCoin Collections and Coin Hoards from Bulgaria no. 2), in English, format 16?, 88 pp., glossy black paperback, 152 coins and 2 coin dies.

Words by the author: "The aim of the current booklet is to make a presentation of some of the best contemporary Bulgarian masters of copies and replicas of ancient coins. It comprises of 152 "ancient" coins and 2 steel coin dies by Lipanoff masters. When being initially confronted with the specimens, created by this new (for me) "studio", I figured that this was some newly sprung center for production of counterfeits in Bulgaria. I made inquiries and quite easily got in contact with the manufacturers.

These people, named "Lipanoff" work openly, their products are custom-made, and so they do not want anybody to profiteer by their produce. The coins of Lipanoff were not cast or pressed, they were minted. Sadly enough, lots of attempts of fraud have already been made with their products being offered to clients as originals. As the "Lipanoff" studio masters insisted on being correct to their public they decided to publicize periodically their coins and other similar products. So it was my pleasure to present the "Lipanoff" studio production."

BB-1008Books on ForgeriesIn English, format 16?, 78 pp., glossy black paperback, 192 coins in bronze, silver and gold. Sofia

This is a second booklet on the counterfeits of ancient coins from present-day Bulgaria. In 1997, a team of three co-authors lead by Dr Prokopov prepared andedited a first small book of fake coins, which was subsequentlypublished in Sofia. It covered a large group of contemporary fakes of ancient Greek and Roman coins from Bulgaria - 204 specimens in gold, silver and bronze. The present catalogue is the result of that firstbooklet.
The authors prepared the second book in 1998 in the same format. It was not until 2003 that a publisher for this book was found. Prior to publication it was necessary to edit andreformat the manuscript - this publication is the result of that work and reflects information gathered up to the spring of 2003.
In this small format (22.5x14.5 cm) catalogue is published a large group of modern forgeries of ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins coming from Bulgaria. 192 coins in gold, silver, copper, and bronze are catalogued and illustrated with nice black&white photos in chronological and geographic principle. From the total number, 112 specimens are Greek (2 in gold, the remainder in silver); 78 Roman (Republican - 5 denarii and a gold coin of 60 asses; Imperial - 18 in gold, 34 in silver, 5 in bronze, including 5 interesting 4th c. AD' multipla/medallions in gold and silver), as well as 2 Byzantine pieces. A special section of the catalogue is devoted to a group of 77 modern fakes of Thasian type Celtic/Thracian imitation tetradrachms, all in silver. For the first time, 8 sets of new steel dies for striking of Roman Republican and Imperial coins are illustrated and commented.
A comprehensive 5-pages introduction provides background information about the phenomenon of coin forgery production in Bulgaria. The patterns, technology and workshops known are discussed as well as some up-to-date references quoted.
Publication is devoted to serve to professional numismatists and amateur collectors and make familiar with the modern fake types of ancient coins. Such imitations are offered for sale in museum giftshops as replicas and souvenirs in Bulgaria and in the West and North America for use in coin jewellery. The series include a third issue with some 150 additional forgeries. Bulgaria" by I.Prokopov, K. Kissyov and E. Paunov.

BB-1000Historical BooksFrom the Publisher

Michael Grant has established himself as on e of the leading classical historians of our time. Here, from the author of such outstanding works as History of Rome and From Alexander to Cleopatra, are the biographies of ninety-two Roman emperors to A.D. 476.

The Roman emperors were the men who wielded power over the vast empire stretching from Britain to the Sahara and from the Atlantic to the Euphrates -- one of the greatest multiracial states the world has ever known. Almost two thousand years later, it is no easy task to reconstruct the truth about the careers and characters of these controversial, often extraordinary individuals. Michael Grant brings together ancient writings, coins, medallions, inscriptions, and archaeology to help fill many of the tantalizing gaps in our knowledge. He portrays great men such as Augustus, the first Roman princeps, or emperor, and one of the most talented, energetic, and skillful administrators the world has ever known; Claudius, a suspicious and fearful man who ruled with a curious mixture of progressive broadmindedness and antiquarian pedantry; and Aurelian, Diocletian, Constantine, and other emperors who decisively directed the course of events in their times. The result is a magnificent collection of biographical cameos, illustrated throughout with ancient contemporary portraits. Remarkable for its breadth of coverage and eloquent, readable style, The Roman Emperors will become a standard work of reference for students and a treasured addition to the collections of all enthusiastic readers of history.

BB-1001Historical BooksThe personalities of the twelve Caesars of ancient Rome have profoundly impressed themselves upon the world. They formed the theme of that most readable of biographers, Suetonius. He had a lot to say about their sexual and other aberrations, and one of the purposes of the present book is to try to penetrate the fog of picturesque rumor and estimate how seriously the various stories can be regarded. But this is only one part of a general attempt to discover what sort of men these astonishing Caesars were. They bore the perilous responsibility of governing an empire comparable in its gigantic magnitude and diversity to the United States today. It is a matter of perennial concern to investigate how the potentates who wield such vast might, and the men who advise them, cope with their tasks, or fail to cope with them.$9.98
BB-1002Historical BooksTheodor Mommsen set out to provide a full-fledged study of the acquired provinces of the Roman Empire. It was here, rather than in the high councils of Rome itself, that the true destiny and drama of the Roman ideal was enacted. To the extent that it became a reality, the Roman concept of a civilizing world order was realized through conquest and administration--through military, legal, and cultural expansion. The resulting contact, undeniably imposed by Rome upon its provinces' indigenous peoples, eventually created a two-way street. Roman law and custom was inevitably changed by this contact and, Mommsen reminds us, great poets and philosophers, as well as several Roman emperors, came from provinces originally resistant to Roman rule.$9.98
BB-1003Historical BooksFrom the ascension of Augustus to the division of the eastern and western Michael Grant discusses how, aside from emotional anxieties, the emperors were visited by any number of diseases which the stress of their position seemed only to exacerbate. Alcoholism and epilepsy were two illnesses commonly shared by the Caesars, and the list of maladies goes on to include schizophrenia, hyperthyroidism, acute encephalitis, and congenital cerebral paralysis, to name just a few. Their illnesses, both psychological and physical, helped shape the course of history: Aurelius probably would have invaded Germany had he not suffered from bad health, and Septimius Severus likely would have conquered the whole of Britain had his health not prevented him. The emotional disorders of the emperors run the gamut, from the mildly sadistic (Domitian was in the habit, in his free time, of pulling the wings off flies) to the bizarre (Caracalla was known to frequent brothels, driving out the prostitutes and prostituting himself in their place) to the frighteningly homicidal (Caligula stored the corpses of murdered women under his floorboards). Sick Caesars is an account, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic, of men transformed, and more often deranged, by absolute power. Included are: Julius Caesar, Trajan, Augustus, Hadrian, Tiberius, Marcus Aurelius, Caligula, Commodus, Claudius, Caracalla, Domitian, Diocletian, Nerva and the Constantine empires in 364.

Sick Caesars investigates the illnesses that led to the rise and fall of the Roman emperors-and, to some extent, the Roman Empire itself. Continually plagued by plots and intrigues, the Caesars had every reason to live in fear and suspicion.

BB-1004Historical BooksIf Greece and Rome are held to be the cradles of Western civilization, this is in part due to the fact that they are the cradles of written history. Between 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. men such as Herodotus, Thucydides and Tacitus virtually invented the discipline of history as we know it. To these men history was a dual art the art of recording the truth as accurately as possible and the art of writing as lucidly as the great men of letters. This text offers an examination of the primary chroniclers of the ancient world. Beginning with Herodotus and Thucydides and their very different approaches to narration, the book discusses the works and methods of the founders of the historical discipline. After a further discussion of the important later Greek historians, Xenophon and Polybius, the book then examines the Roman masters of the form - Cato, Sallust and Julius Caesar, Livy, Josephus and Tacitus. It then encompasses two masters of biographical history, Plutarch and Suetonius, before concluding with a very different view of the later Empire, Eusebius and Ammianus. It records the thousand-year struggle to create a durable record of human affairs.$9.98
